The best way to describe the spiders we saw is that as I followed Elvis and JD walking along the grassy path, it appeared as though they were parting the "Sea of Spiders". Spiders of all sizes (up to bodies 1.5 inches long+ legs) fled away from their feet in all directions. Seriously, it was more than a little freaky. Yet in all the time, I don't think a single spider climbed on any of us. They clearly wanted to get away. On the other hand, I think I swallowed about 15 of the gnats that clustered around my headlamp. "Breathe through your nose," Elvis laughed. Not easy when you're panting from the heat!

This is my first comment I have every submitted. I can't imagine being surrounded by so many spiders. Even one freaks me out, if it is moving toward me. You are both so brave! Have you seen any snakes? I am not afraid of snakes. I love hearing about your adventures, and especially enjoy seeing the pictures of my red headed daughter.

I thought the same thing. I would have thought the water would have been closer to 26 to 27 C (about 80 F). Is there a reason why the water is so cool in that area?

Your spider reminds me of Costa Rica, we found this guy: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tylerkaraszewski/3941925464/in/set-72157622297773589/ and this guy: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tylerkaraszewski/3941380847/in/set-72157622297773589/ and that doesn't even include this guy: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tylerkaraszewski/3941900630/in/set-72157622297773589/ or this guy: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tylerkaraszewski/3941371265/in/set-72157622297773589/

Now there's a 99% chance your blogging software throws this comment in the trash because it has more than one link in it and therefore looks like spam.

You refer to the water as warm, and then say 16-17°C. I don't typically check water temps, so I'm not sure, but... 61-63°F doesn't sound very warm.

Thousands of spiders? No thanks!

Your waterfall experience reminded me of the time I got wedged under a large rock in the middle of a Smoky Mountain river while intertubing. Too bad I didn't know about "taking care of the first problem" because I simply thrashed about until I thankfully found daylight.

I've enjoyed following along on your journey!
