Enjoyed reading this and that you did not get to where you are overnight and did not let your slow start hamper your goals. There are so many parallels with what you are going through and the financial journey you encourage people to undertake.

Can you share what scale you are using?

Great job! I think the key is experimenting until you find the right eating plan and exercise plan, and you are getting there.

Favorite phrase: "After escaping from the paleo prison..." I think a simple goal of eating real food is a better, more sustainable plan. I subscribe to the Michael Pollan way of eating: Eat (real) food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

Hey J.D.! Great to hear how well Crossfit is working for you and see it all laid out on spreadsheets! I've got some geek in me too. My favorite photo right now is the 'before photo' I had my wife take the week you, me, and Lyle started on-ramp. Feels really good to be able to visualize how far we're both going in the right direction.

J.D., you're 1 of about 3 people with a personal blog I can read without my eyes glazing over.

Congrats on picking up so much steam. You're lookin' trimmer every time I see you. Just watch out for those cupcakes! :-P

I've gone paleo (primal - same thing, but I read "The Primal Blueprint) for almost 3 months. I lost almost 20 lbs within about 3 weeks and find it easy to follow - when I do eat carbs i can definitely tell. It is a much more expensive way to eat, but seems easier to follow than calorie-counting.

The writer of The Primal Blueprint addresses "The low carb flu" which you probably experienced in May given the extended break taken in Alaska (or maybe not) article here:

http://www.marksdailyapple.com/low-carb-flu/

Over the same period of time, I made some changes in my workout - I lift heavy once a week, do High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) once a week, sprint once (takes around 5-10 mins) and go for a couple of longish walks (5 - 10 miles).

I'd suggest getting a heart-rate monitor and in your 66 miles of cycling ensure you stay between 55-75% of your maximum - less wear and tear on your body and more fat-burning going on.

Sorry for the unsolicited advice - just relaying things I learned.

Great work and good luck on attaining your final goal.

Congratulations on hitting a groove! I checked out the CO route this year - "holy cats" indeed! It will be so so so so so beautiful. Plan on using those layover days wisely :) For me (in years past) that means some serious lolling about in camp.

One of my bike buddies lives in Toronto and has been doing a lot of gym fitness in addition to some riding, but not a ton of training. Even so, she noticed a sharp increase in her overall comfort and stamina on a ride she did last week that she's done several other years (it's something like Seattle to Portland, as far as I can tell, but goes to Niagara Falls). Crossfit will be your friend!
