You cannot possibly understand how much I’m dying inside, how desperately anxious I am for Steve Jobs’ keynote address at MacWorld tomorrow. I’ve always enjoyed the sense of anticipation for these, but this time it’s almost more than I can bear. Why? I don’t really know.

Part of it is that I can afford to — and expect to — purchase whatever gadgets he happens to announce. But mostly I think it’s because I’ve just become aware how handy it would be to have a truly Mac-oriented phone/information manager. And wouldn’t you know it? That’s what he’s expected to unveil. I have my fingers crossed that:

  1. He will indeed announce such a device;
  2. The device will actually do much, much more (approaching a mini-computer); and
  3. The device won’t be exorbitantly expensive (relatively speaking).

Of course, I won’t actually be able to pay attention to Jobs’ speech. I have an appointment with a customer, and then have to make the company Costco trip. This just makes things all the more painful!

Artist’s concept (there’s almost no chance this image is genuine):

it may not be genuine, but it sure is cool looking.

    Want. One. Now.

Although not a Mac user, I do really like the ergonomics of my iPod and I have to admit that Apple does usually do an excellent job of product design. I’d seriously consider getting an iPhone. And certainly Karen would be standing in line. In fact, although we’re waiting to get her a new phone, this is one of the things we’re waiting for.

Pretty cool technology, but I will never buy one.

    1) It costs about as much as my Mac Mini,
    2) I have no interest in a portable music player,
    3) I won’t spend more than $20 for a cell phone upgrade,
    4) I generally look maps up on Google before leaving for a destination.

Just one more really expensive thing that you don’t really need.

Well, the thing was almost exactly what I had hoped and expected. It’s a little pricey, and won’t be available until June. I’ve looked at all the videos at Apple’s web site (thanks for the link, Jeff), and I have to say: I love it. Will I buy one? It’s hard to know. If my web sites continue to perform well, I suspect it will become a “business expense”.

There was some other cool Mac news today:

    • Apple upgraded its wireless router. If you have a newer Mac, as I do, then the new router will boost throughput by roughly five times. (Or so the ad copy claims.) Since the wireless connection is the big bottleneck for most internet connections, this is a Good Thing.
    • Apple also finalized specs on its Apple TV appliance. This will connect to your television and accept all the content that you purchase from the iTunes Music Store. I’m a little baffled at the miniscule hard drive size. WTF? 40gb? That’s not enough for anything. On this computer I have 1-1/2 seasons of Battlestar Galactica, 1/2 season of The Office, and some random shows. They take up 30gb. Also, why can’t this record video like a DVR? My enthusiasm for this has waned sharply since I first heard about it.
    • Microsoft has announced the next version of Office. Office 2008 will ship in the second half of this year, and will include various upgrades.

Still no word on when the next version of the OS will be released, or on upgrades to iLife and iWork.

Did you watch the keynote? Jobs is such a great speaker – down to earth, clearly articulate, and a little funny. Watch the iphone introduction and be amazed – http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/j47d52oo/event/

I thought the iphone was amazing. I want one. I think it is perfect for how I use technology on the go.

One of the reasons I don’t listen to my ipod much, is because I already have a cell phone and camera and often my MacBook to carry around. Now I can have all three at once — and my calendar, web browser and bookmarks, email, address book, and photos.

    WOW!

The mega touch screen is so cool. Much better than the artist’s conception above.
